postcard from the edge?

the internet is such a wonderful thing….

i was sitting at work last night, and it was late in the late shift….i decided to do one e-mail check before calling it a night. and lo and behold, i open up my e-mail and see a message with the subject “I hope this works!” and i know it’s not spam. but it’s from someone whose initials are J P. curious, i opened it up and was totally floored — it was one of my old guam buddies, jason prudente. holy crap. i’d been trying to find the guy for about six years. james and i once spent a good chunk of time trying to figure out where jas was.

but anyhow, as it turns out, jason lives in hawaii now. but he found out my e-mail address because he’d done a search for himself on the internet. he had run some race in hawaii and wanted to find his time….and instead found a post i had written almost a year and a half ago on a Guam web board….i’d been asking around if people knew him and knew where he was. and so, jason e-mailed me himself. it was crazy. i was really glad to hear from him.

i am now 2-for-2 on that Guam message board. both people i’ve asked about have turned up. sweet.

there is nothing like hearing from people you haven’t thought about in a million years….it makes me feel all giddy and good inside.

now all we need is a triple-j reunion and we’d be set. now THAT could be an interesting time….

fun in florida.

back and busy as a bee…..

i was in florida last week….it was a good trip. we started out with the 14-hour drive to orlando last friday…..i took over in south carolina and went to jacksonville. the drive wasn’t too bad. we did manage to get into orlando at a decent hour (about 10:30). the main thing for me was being able to set foot in both south carolina and georgia….two states i had not been to yet….and i got to do exactly that. i think i’m up to 33 states now. something like that. at least i’ve got the whole east coast from massachusetts to florida covered. now i just need to go to maine and new hampshire and i can say i’ve been to every state on the eastern coast. ha.

anyhow, we spent saturday in orlando with mike and rizza….of course, they got ed and i into disney world for FREE. nothing like hitting a theme park and not having to pay anything. i hadn’t been to disney world in close to 15 years….and it was actually a lot of fun. we hit epcot first, rode a couple of rides (felt pretty sick after riding this space ride…..nothing like being pressed down by a few Gs….), played Dance Dance Revolution (the game used Disney characters as DJs and Disney tunes in techno — it was awesome), and saw some workers tooling around on Segways. we then hit MGM studios and rode the Tower of Terror (freakin’ cool….even though i hate rides that plummet) and the Rockin Roller coaster (a pretty sweet coaster). there wasn’t a whole lot of time left for the Magic Kingdom, but at least we caught some fireworks, and i got to ride Space Mountain (a must in any Disney park for me….it’s not a trip to Disney World/Land without a spin on Space Mountain).

sunday, we headed to clearwater with rizza and mike in tow, hung out at the beach (cold! too cold to swim!) and ate at a pretty sweet hawaiian bbq joint. monday (valentine’s) was a chill-out day, and i went home tuesday.

florida was warm. i want to go back. it’s 27 degrees here. blah. well, i will be back in florida in march at least….

darned kids …

bill cosby used to have that show….kids say the darndest things…..it’s totally true….

so i’m teaching my ballet classes on saturday morning….in my first class, there is one boy….and one of the chicks in the class kept hanging on to him this particular day….and when they were all sitting in a line, waiting to take turns doing steps across the floor….the chick says, “this is my husband.” i thought it was hilarious. mind you, though, these kids are 5 years old! i didn’t think 5-year-old kids thought about this like that….but she was kind of hanging on him for a while and she kept saying that….to the point the boy was like, “stop it….it’s not funny.”

in my second class, it’s all girls…just three of them showed up….they’re all about 6 or so, close to 7. and a couple of them start asking me, “are you from china? are you from japan?” i guess i’m that obviously asian! but it wasn’t mean or anything….they were being goofy. later on, we’re doing jumps in class and one of the chicks says, “miss jenn, you jiggle a lot when you jump.” now, if an adult says that to you, you probably sock them in the face for calling you fat. a kid, though? i was a little stunned at first, but joked around about it….i mean, the kids are 6! they’re not being malicious or anything (or at least i hope not). and i know i have massive legs. and i could stand to jiggle less. oh, well.

kids are always so much smarter than you give them credit for, even if you think they’re pretty smart already. and maybe it’s just a reflection of modern society. it always surprises me how forward these kids are.

man, i wish i was 5 or 6 again and that smart!
